What to Check in a Broker Account-Opening Form

This checklist helps you read account-opening information. It does not recommend a broker, assess an account's suitability, or replace the provider's current documents and official guidance.

Confirm who you are opening the account with

Before signing, compare the legal name, trade name, and registration number in the account-opening material with the current official SEBI stock-broker directory. Where a demat account is involved, identify the relevant depository participant and check its official information as applicable.

SEBI's investor material says to deal with SEBI-registered intermediaries and to read documents and conditions before signing.

Read the documents and charges

Read the account-opening form, terms, authorisations, risk disclosures, tariff or schedule of charges, and any linked documents supplied by the provider. Ask the provider to explain a field or charge you do not understand before you sign.

SEBI's investor guidance advises investors to note applicable charges, fees, and brokerage, and to keep records of documents signed, statements, and contract notes.

  1. Check that your personal and bank details are complete and accurate before signing.
  2. Do not sign blank or partly completed forms; cancel unused blank spaces where appropriate.
  3. Keep copies of the completed forms, terms, charge information, and acknowledgements.
  4. Confirm how you will receive statements, trade alerts, and contract notes, then review them after the account is opened.

Protect your account details

Do not share passwords or other critical account credentials. SEBI's investor guidance also advises keeping your contact details current and reviewing communications and account records regularly.

If a form, caller, website, or payment request seems inconsistent with the official record or the provider's independently found contact channels, stop and clarify before proceeding.
